The Soloists
Richard
Svoboda has been the principal bassoonist of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra and a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players since
1989. He is currently on the faculties of the New England
Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood
Music Center.
He has also taught
at the Sarasota Music Festival, the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar,
the Popkin-Glickman Bassoon Camp, and the Symphony School of
America, and has given master classes throughout the world. Prior
to his appointment to the BSO he performed for ten seasons as
principal bassoonist of the Jacksonville Symphony, and studied with
William Winstead, George Berry and Gary Echols.
Mr. Svoboda has
appeared numerous times with chamber ensembles, as an orchestral
soloist, and in recital. Among his solo appearances with the Boston
Symphony Orchestra have been performances of John Williams’ bassoon
concerto Five Sacred Trees with the composer conducting as
well as the Weber Concerto for Bassoon under the baton
of Seiji Ozawa. In October of 2007 he premiered Michael Gandolfi’s
Concerto for Bassoon with Yoichi Udagawa and the Melrose
Symphony Orchestra.
A Nebraska native,
Mr. Svoboda graduated with High Distinction from the University of
Nebraska where he received a Bachelor of Music in Education degree,
and from which in 2001 he received an Outstanding Alumni Achievement
Award. He is married and has four daughters and resides in Melrose,
Massachusetts.
Clarinetist
Erin Svoboda is an active orchestral and chamber musician and
an advocate for contemporary music. She has recorded Tibetan
Dances on the Naxos label with Cho-Liang Lin and Bright Sheng on
the album Spring Dreams and has been a member of contemporary
chamber groups such as the New Fromm Players at Tanglewood, the
Mimesis Ensemble, and the neoLIT ensemble. Erin has been a
participant at the Marlboro Music Festival and has worked closely
with composers such as John Harbison, Bright Sheng, Yehudi Wyner,
John Heiss, and Augusta Read Thomas. Erin has performed in a chamber
setting with the Daedalus Quartet and members of the Vienna
Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland orchestra, and National
Symphony and has performed as soloist with orchestras in the Boston
Area. Erin had her solo debut with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra
under Yoichi Udagawa in 2000 playing the Weber Second Clarinet
Concerto.
As
an orchestral musician, Erin holds the position of Second Clarinet
in the Greater Bridgeport Symphony and performs often with the
Metropolitan Opera. She has also performed with the New York City
Opera, American Symphony, and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Erin
has attended the Tanglewood, Pacific, and Aspen Music Festivals and
has performed as an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician in the
United States, South America, and Asia.
Erin holds degrees in Clarinet Performance from the New England
Conservatory, Temple University, and the Manhattan School of Music.
Her major teachers include Thomas Martin, Ricardo Morales, Mark
Nuccio, and Scott Andrews.
