The Soloists

Richard Svoboda has been the principal bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players since 1989.  He is currently on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Center.

He has also taught at the Sarasota Music Festival, the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar, the Popkin-Glickman Bassoon Camp, and the Symphony School of America, and has given master classes throughout the world.  Prior to his appointment to the BSO he performed for ten seasons as principal bassoonist of the Jacksonville Symphony, and studied with William Winstead, George Berry and Gary Echols.

Mr. Svoboda has appeared numerous times with chamber ensembles, as an orchestral soloist, and in recital.  Among his solo appearances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra have been performances of John Williams’ bassoon concerto Five Sacred Trees with the composer conducting as well as the Weber Concerto for Bassoon under the baton of Seiji Ozawa.  In October of 2007 he premiered Michael Gandolfi’s Concerto for Bassoon with Yoichi Udagawa and the Melrose Symphony Orchestra.

A Nebraska native, Mr. Svoboda graduated with High Distinction from the University of Nebraska where he received a Bachelor of Music in Education degree, and from which in 2001 he received an Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award.  He is married and has four daughters and resides in Melrose, Massachusetts.

Clarinetist Erin Svoboda is an active orchestral and chamber musician and an advocate for contemporary music.  She has recorded Tibetan Dances on the Naxos label with Cho-Liang Lin and Bright Sheng on the album Spring Dreams and has been a member of contemporary chamber groups such as the New Fromm Players at Tanglewood, the Mimesis Ensemble, and the neoLIT ensemble.  Erin has been a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival and has worked closely with composers such as John Harbison, Bright Sheng, Yehudi Wyner, John Heiss, and Augusta Read Thomas. Erin has performed in a chamber setting with the Daedalus Quartet and members of the Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland orchestra, and National Symphony and has performed as soloist with orchestras in the Boston Area.  Erin had her solo debut with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra under Yoichi Udagawa in 2000 playing the Weber Second Clarinet Concerto.

As an orchestral musician, Erin holds the position of Second Clarinet in the Greater Bridgeport Symphony and performs often with the Metropolitan Opera.  She has also performed with the New York City Opera, American Symphony, and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.  Erin has attended the Tanglewood, Pacific, and Aspen Music Festivals and has performed as an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician in the United States, South America, and Asia.

Erin holds degrees in Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory, Temple University, and the Manhattan School of Music. Her major teachers include Thomas Martin, Ricardo Morales, Mark Nuccio, and Scott Andrews.
